There are moments in this work that remind me exactly why I do what I do.

Last week, I received an email that simply said:

“I can’t wait a week.”

The moment I read those words, I replied immediately:

“Can I please have your phone number so I can call you?”

A short time later, I picked up the phone.

We spoke for over an hour. At first, we talked through his situation, the challenges he was facing, and the overwhelming weight he had been carrying. Then, before we ended the call, he said something I’ll never forget:

“You saved me.”

I paused and asked, “Why do you say that?”

His response hit me hard.

“Because no one wants to listen to me.”

In that moment, I knew he couldn’t do this alone.

As he was in Queensland, I immediately connected him with a trusted family lawyer in my professional network. Together, we reassured him that we would work alongside him, break everything down into manageable steps, and help him navigate what felt impossible. I apologised that I had been fully booked, but I also promised him that we weren’t going anywhere.

He calmed down.

He cried.

He was incredibly grateful.

A few days passed, and then… silence.

Neither the lawyer nor I could reach him.

We both became genuinely concerned.

For hours, we called and messaged, hoping he would answer.

Eventually, a message came through:

“I am OK. Thank you to both of you for being there and standing by me. No one has.”

Those words meant more than he’ll probably ever know.

Then, on Friday, we appeared virtually with him in Court.

The outcome was incredibly positive.

After everything we’d been through together over those days, we found ourselves laughing, smiling, and finally seeing some light at the end of what had been a very dark tunnel.

At the very beginning of this journey, I said to him:

“Trust me. Trust my lawyer. Trust that we’ve both got your back.”

He simply replied:

“I know.”

Towards the end, I admitted something to him.

I told him he had brought tears to my eyes.

Not because of the Court outcome…

But because I understood.

I understood the financial pressure.

I understood the uncertainty.

I understood what it’s like to feel like the system is swallowing you whole.

I’ve lived it.

His journey isn’t over yet, but he’s so much closer to being able to breathe again.

There is one thing I want people to understand.

This has never been about the money.

Not for me.

And not for the lawyer who stood beside him.

It’s about the person.

It’s about caring enough to answer the phone, to check in when someone goes quiet, to stand beside someone when they feel like they’re standing completely alone.

Sometimes we support people we’ve never met before. People who don’t know us and who have never spoken to us until that very moment.

Yet they place their trust in us.

Not because they know what the outcome will be…

But because, for the first time in a long time, they feel heard.

They feel believed.

They feel like someone genuinely cares.

If, through our time, compassion, and support, we can help change the direction of someone’s life, then every hour is worth it.

Because no one should ever feel like they have to face life’s hardest moments alone.

Stories like this remind me that sometimes people don’t need someone to have all the answers.

Sometimes…

They just need someone who will answer the phone.

❤️ If you’re struggling, please know that you don’t have to carry it alone. Whether it’s me, a trusted friend, a professional, or a support service, please reach out.
